The short answer

The PROFIT Plan is Publix’s employee stock ownership plan (ESOP). Each year Publix decides on a contribution and puts Publix stock into eligible associates’ accounts. You don’t pay anything and you don’t sign up.

You join after a year with at least 1,000 work credit hours. You’re fully vested after 3 years of credited service. The money is for later: you get it after you leave Publix.

When you become eligible

Publix says you become a participant after one year of employment in which you reach at least 1,000 work credit hours (Publix PROFIT Plan). That’s about 20 hours a week on average.

Hours that count toward the 1,000

  • Paid regular and overtime hours
  • Holiday, vacation and sick pay
  • Jury duty and bereavement time
  • Approved FMLA, workers’ compensation, domestic or sexual violence, and military leave

Disability leave generally doesn’t count unless you’re receiving sick pay during it.

Your year runs from your hire date, which Publix calls your anniversary year. Part-time associates who average under 20 hours can miss a year, so check your hours if you’re close.

How the yearly contribution works

  1. The plan year runs January 1 to December 31.
  2. Publix’s board of directors decides the contribution for that year. It’s generally made in Publix stock.
  3. To get it, you need 1,000 or more work credit hours in the anniversary year that ends in that plan year.
  4. If you aren’t vested yet, you also have to be employed on December 31.
  5. The stock lands in your account in early spring, based on your eligible wages from the year before.

A worked example

For the 2019 plan year, Publix contributed 8% of eligible wages, and more than 139,000 associates received stock, about $2,700 each on average (Publix). The percentage changes every year.

If the contribution isAnd your eligible wages wereYour contribution would beShares at $18.70
8% (the 2019 rate)$30,000$2,400about 128
8% (the 2019 rate)$45,000$3,600about 192

This is arithmetic for illustration, not a forecast. The board sets each year’s rate, and the share price is the one Publix sets at the time of the contribution.

For scale: Publix recorded $561 million of ESOP contribution expense for 2025, up from $516 million in 2024 (Publix 2025 Form 10-K).

Vesting: when the stock is really yours

You’re fully vested when any one of these happens (Publix vesting rules):

EventFully vested?
3 years of credited serviceYes
You reach age 60Yes
You become disabledYes
You die (your beneficiary receives it)Yes

A year of credited service counts when you reach 1,000 work credit hours in your anniversary year. Publix’s own careers site puts it simply: associates are fully vested after three years of continuous employment.

Leaving before you’re vested? Check the plan documents or ask the Retirement Department what happens to your balance before you decide your last day. Sometimes a few weeks makes the difference.

Stock price and dividends

Publix stock isn’t traded on any exchange. Publix sets the price each quarter with its results, and your PROFIT Plan account rises or falls with it.

Effective datePrice per share
March 2026$19.65
May 2026$20.45
August 2026$19.60
November 2026$18.70

Price source: Publix quarterly results releases, most recently Q3 2026. In 2025 Publix paid dividends of $0.439 per share (Form 10-K).

A lower quarterly price doesn’t take shares away. It changes what each share is worth that quarter.

When you leave or retire

Shares are distributed mainly to vested participants who have left Publix. Because the stock isn’t traded on an exchange, the plan includes a put option: Publix must buy back distributed shares at fair value for a set period (Form 10-K).

  • Distributions follow a published calendar with paperwork deadlines and closed periods.
  • Federal ESOP rules let participants aged 55 or older with 10 years in the plan diversify part of their account.
  • Taking money before age 59½ can add a 10% IRS tax, with exceptions such as leaving your job in or after the year you turn 55 (IRS Topic 558).
  • Shares versus cash, and rollover choices, have different tax results. Talk to the Retirement Department and a tax professional first.

From the manager’s desk

The PROFIT Plan was the slow part: distribution paperwork, deadlines from the retirement calendar, and decisions about shares versus cash that I took to a tax professional before signing anything.

Mary’s advice

From the manager’s desk

Every year, Publix put stock in my account without me lifting a finger, and over 40 years that quietly became the biggest single part of my retirement.

My advice to a new associate is simple: leave it alone. Don’t cash it out when life gets tight. And when you move, update your address with stockholder services too. The Retirement Department can only send paperwork where you tell them you are.
